Are You Scent Sensitive? Are You Scent Sensitive?

If this is your first time considering soy candles or glycerin soap, I suggest you have a look at the About Glycerin Soap and About Soy Candles pages. Before placing an order through the website, you may also want to have a peek at my products that are available in locations throughout Eastern Nova Scotia.
Many people find they have sensitivities to certain scents and fragrances. Often this can come as an unpleasant surprise when a new scent or fragrance is encountered for the first time. If you are scent sensitive then you know first hand how irritating this can be. A stuffy nose, red eyes, and even a headache are some of the milder symptoms. Almost without exception all of my products are scented. As I (in an irritatingly ironic twist) am somewhat scent sensitive myself, none of my products are overly scented. I prefer the scent of a soy candle to lightly fill the room rather then overwhelm the whole house and I like the scent of soap to be gently felt on the skin rather then overpowering and a sledgehammer to the senses like most harsh, commercial soaps.
What About Fragrance Oils?
As listed on the About Glycerin Soap and About Soy Wax pages, I use Fragrance Oils in all of my scented products. Although Fragrance Oils (which are a blend of natural and synthetic scents) have widely been used in the cosmetics and bath & body industry for decades, Essential Oils have recently become popular amongst people who have a desire for a 100% natural product.
What Does Health Canada Say?
"There is a general assumption among consumers that "natural" products are better or healthier than similar ones using synthetic ingredients. Often, however, these "natural" ingredients are no different in chemical composition than their synthetic counterparts. In fact, a synthetic substance which mimics a natural one can sometimes provide a purer, more stable ingredient which gives the product a longer usable life.
Health Canada considers both natural and synthetic ingredients to be equally suitable for use in cosmetics."
Why Do I Use Fragrance Oils?
Since Essential Oils are created by distilling or otherwise removing the natural oils from plant products, many people automatically assume that they are not only safer to use but they are healthier for you as well. As someone who is rather scent sensitive myself I tend to take a different view of things.
  • Fragrance Oils are designed to be skin-safe while many Essential Oils are so concentrated as to be a skin irritant if not carefully diluted.
  • A quality Fragrance Oil will create a gentle scent and is fairly consistent in scent level regardless of concentration while Essential Oils can be overpowering and an actual lung irritant at high concentrations - making it difficult to gauge scent levels while measuring.
  • I personally find it easier to experiment with Fragrance Oil combinations as 'what you smell is what you get'. I've found that many Essential Oils can smell rather sharp and medicinal in nature right out of the bottle, making it difficult to determine the end result of mixing until after they have been 'cooked'.
  • Perhaps most importantly for me, I occasionally become only slightly stuffed up after working with Fragrance Oils all day while Essential Oils tend to leave me with headaches and a stuffy nose regardless of how much ventilation I use.
Need A Scentless Product?
I do carry a very small variety of unscented products. If you have scent sensitivities or would simply like a non-scented version of any of my scented products, please let me know. I am generally filling orders throughout the week and it usually isn't a problem to make a separate pour before adding fragrance.
There may be some delay in crafting your specific non-scented products as certain recipes (particularly Glycerin soap) do not make small batches very well - so please be patient!
